| our next assignment (due next Thursday) is to photograph 'something which gives you pleasure'. on thinking over the assignment i wasn't sure if the instructor meant literally - take pictures of the things you enjoy - or enjoy yourself when you take a photograph. the second interpretation is easier i think - as long as i'm not working with a new-to-me-camera i love just the act of taking a photograph. the heft of a camera in my hand - the squint through the viewfinder - the breath held as the shutter is released. i went with the first interpretation though and made a list of the things i enjoy that i could photograph. and came up with a rather short list. not because i don't enjoy life but because a lot of pleasures happen in the summer on the island - afternoons at the lake or the beach or a wander through deep forest - that sort of thing. winter in Alberta is about mostly work. there are a lot of satisfactions with my work but i can't photograph any of them - so my list had mostly simple pleasures on it. the newspaper. coffee. wind. books. the letter E. BBC World News. a good movie. the evening sky. bright colors. sunlight. |
