Telegraph Cove in the winter - 2010-01-22 21:10:54
| i've posted summer shots from Telegraph Cove a few times - this is what it looks like in the winter. it was raining hard when i took this on New Year's Day. the history of Telegraph Cove is interesting. it was established between 1911 and 1912 as the northern terminus of the Campbell River telegraph line. later a salmon saltery and a small sawmill were built here and Telegraph Cove was a relay station in World War II. the road in yesterday's photograph was constructed in 1956 and paved in 2006. this means that for over 40 years people lived here and the only way in or out was boat or float plane. there's a restaurant here named Killer Whale Cafe. on the walls of the restaurant are old photographs from the 40's. in one the women of the community stand on the dock in their fur coats waiting for the weekly supply ship that brought newspapers and groceries from the outside world. they must have been so strong to live this life with no internet and perhaps not even tv. i'd only been here in the summer but when i was on the north island at Christmas i asked my husband if we could drive over here. it looked as i expected it would in the winter. it's likely that less than 20 people live here in the winter - we didn't see a soul but we did see smoke from chimneys and a few cars in driveways. after we went to visit friends who live 30 minutes away and who have been in the area since the 70's. |
