roll 5 was taken at the same site as roll 4 but on a different day. i've thought more about the meaning of the Roll 4 images - particularly the ones with both the lamp and the rug in them. their most simple meaning is that as long as i'm warm enough i prefer to be outside rather than inside. sometimes the outside could use more comforts though so it was fun to take the 'inside' things outside. i too wanted to just sit there and relax when i took these photos. on a slightly deeper level the photographs are thinking about how some things are useful only in certain contexts. like the lamp - it's very useful in the living room but completely irrelevant in this setting - unless of course i brought a generator along. and to push even further into personal territory i think these are about a need to dissolve some walls in my relationships. it was Mary's funeral i attended yesterday. she was a lifelong friend of my mother and a decade ago she became my friend as well. there were a few years where for work i drove to remote areas of Alberta and Saskatachewan and my mother suggested i stay at Mary's when i was in Calgary. i used to arrive late at night and Mary would be waiting - there was always a beautiful guest room and soft sheets - and in the morning Mary's breakfast of homemade toast and preserves - talk of what was going on in our lives and a lunch she packed for me. if i had to chose only one word to describe Mary it would be generous. during the funeral someone said - 'if Mary made you a friend it was keeps'. the cathedral was full - a testament to the truth of those words. my approach to friendship has been much tougher - hard to get on my list - easy to get yourself taken off. i'm grateful that Mary showed me another way and i'd like to change my approach.
