Moraine Lake

this one was taken in Fall 08 - it's Moraine Lake which is about 20 minutes from Lake Louise. Lake Louise is of course the more famous spot and fewer people go to Moraine Lake - i'd be hard pressed though to lay money on which one is prettier. i've thought about posting this photograph many times but each time until today i've abandoned the idea in favor of something else. partly this one is here today as a promise to myself that i'll go back and photograph Moraine Lake again. i'm quite sure i would approach this site differently now. a return will have to wait until early summer or next fall though as the lake will to be a block of ice now. this morning i read an essay by Lucy Lippard in a book on feminist photography. in it she offers a few theories on why more women haven't made mega bucks in landscape photography. okay she doesn't use the term 'mega bucks' she mulls over why women landscape photographers are not as well known as male landscape photographers - she says why do we not have an 'Eve' Adams to match Ansel and Robert Adams. hell i'd be glad to have a Louisa Baltz or an Esther Burtynsky. Lippard doesn't completely answer her question, perhaps there isn't a definitive answer - she does cite a few female landscape photographers who have been influential and also talks about women being associated more with the domestic and interior aspects of life. she talks about women relating to the land through gardening - about women rejecting the grand view for more personal representation. okay so right about now i should be making a point. the thing is i don't have a well thought out point today. i'm rolling ideas around in my head like marbles - trying to come to a clearer understanding about what it is i'm doing out there with the camera. honesty the grand view leaves me cold more often than not. and the micro view isn't really for me either. i mean i like to look at other people's work with the grand view and the micro view but neither of these feel like they fit for me. the most basic truth is my life takes me regularly to the wilderness and it always has and years before the internet and a photoblog i took a camera along - it's more fun though to bring the photographs back and share them with others. one last note - this one of Moraine Lake is pretty much how it came out of the camera - a small crop and a contrast adjustment and that's all - i'm hoping you'll see it as it was on sunday in October 2008 just as it was starting to rain.
