| nothing new here until next Monday - have a few long days of work coming up and then am away this weekend. a few people asked about what minerals are in the badlands rock formations. the formations are sedimentary rocks formed through deposit and consolidation of clays, sands and minerals. the rust colored bands and rocks are iron oxide. there is also coal in the area and i saw some mica and quartz crystals. there's probably other minerals there as well that i didn't recognize. the sand forms look soft but they are in fact quite hard - a bit like cement. not much i can tell you about the old building in today's image - this was taken last week in the Crowsnest Pass and to get to this spot i drove my truck a little too fast by a 6 foot high no-unauthorized-personnel-sign to catch the gist of the message. i would have stayed longer to explore but i ran out of memory card and a security vehicle showed up. note added: the white in the background is ice on the lake - the building is close to the lake edge. |
