whitewash - 2008-07-03 18:57:10
| the beaches are still here - ocean views every time you turn around. peaceful yes -but not the whole story. just as i never saw myself as a landscape photographer i also never saw myself as a journalistic photographer. i'm surprising myself though at what i fly by in the truck and then stop and track back to photograph. the lumber industry was the main employer in this area and the industry is a hot issue again this summer. many mills closing - hundreds laid off for the summer in other mills. i'm not educated on the issues but i'm paying more attention. when i saw this sign in early june yet another mill closure had been announced and hard hats were nailed to this Elk Falls Lumbermill sign by workers - i'm assuming as a protest or an expression of solidarity with those who had lost jobs. then i assume the hard hats were removed by management and then more anger and the spray painting of the words "no respect" - and then what looks like whitewash over top by management again. this year i'm up here to rest and refuel - a 2 month check out as someone said - but i'm also thinking about recent conflicts in my own life and the whitewashing that's gone on and am looking for some wisdom to quell the anger rather than cover it over yet again. |
