songs from the mall two - 2008-06-12 19:39:27
| this was taken in early spring on the same day as yesterday's photo. same mall - just a few meters over. i had recently taken a studio lighting class with a very skilled fashion photographer. he insisted i take my camera off P mode and shot manual focus and exposure. i'm all for people knowing their camera inside and out and understanding apertures and exposures and i have a lot to learn here. the thing is street photography is a different game than studio photography where you control lighting, can instruct the model and shooting for 12 hours to get 3 good captures is acceptable. just goes to show instruction is invaluable but in the end everyone has to find what works for themselves. for me with candid street photography auto focus is where i need to be. most of my street stuff gets posted on my flickr page but i feel like putting a bit of it here this week. with this photo i was looking for a simple backdrop and found this red wall. it meant standing in the middle of the mall with no tree or waste basket to lean against or hide behind. at the time the red wall seemed like a perfect backdrop and it was only when i looked at the images later that i realized the sunlight came too low. i watched this young woman wander for a while - she had a dreamy look on her face and this changed only when she saw me raise the camera to my face as she stepped in front of me. i'm on 18mm here so am very close to her. |
