one of the goals of the course is to explore how "photographic images operate as both art and visual culture". we're also to focus on creating pieces with strong conceptual underpinnings. i know now i can take a good photograph when i want to but i'm nervous about making the leap to conceptual work. i'm worried about producing work that feels cold or clinical. i'm also worried about having ideas that are good enough. anyway, hopefully i will ease in to it. underlying most of the assignments is the expectation that we record on a daily basis the visual world around us. at lunch time i drove to bank and parked in front of the lingerie store. the mix of paintings and undergarments in the window caught my eye. i've purposely stayed away from photographing or posting images that have much to do with sex or sexuality. at this moment though of parking in front of the lingerie store i wished i hadn't forgotten my camera in my office. after work i went back to this spot and took the photograph knowing i would post it tonight. driving home i thought why this one? when i was taking the photograph i was careful to include the reflection of the sky. i don't like this photograph much, which is fine by me. i think it's good to take photographs you don't like. the thing i do like about it though is the reflection of the sky and i think part of what this photograph is about for me is my current wish to move outside any sort of issues of gender. i'm tired of gender. an impossible wish of course.
