sept 23rd walk #1 (1 of 6 posted today) - 2010-09-25 17:57:55
| first a bit of camera talk and then a description of our next assignment. the 6 photos posted today were all taken with the old Ansco box camera i bought recently. the film is Kodak Ektar and i developed it at home. i was mistaken about the Ansco camera being a pinhole. the Ansco was advertised as a pinhole camera but in fact it has a plastic lens. i've constructed a cardboard box pinhole camera for 120 film but am still working some of the bugs out of it. having shot 3 rolls with the Ansco box camera i can say it does better with some sort of a figure or structure in the image - wide open landscapes just end up looking like fuzz. the next assignment for the class is to photograph two different types of walks. in one we are to be a passive, observational (documentary) walker. and in the other we are to be an active walker with an interventionist engagement with the area. we are to "use the walk as a vehicle for collecting photographic information of the process of moving through space as well as the intervention. this project addresses issues of the artist's engagement with space and movement, mapping and considerations of the urban and the rural." i've been having trouble with the ideas of movement and mapping. on Thursday when i took these photographs i decided to start by going to the library to photograph an overview of the area where i would then walk. this photograph is taken from inside the library looking down at the coulee. if you look carefully you can see the white reflection of a book someone was reading on the upper right side of the image. the next photograph was taken standing at the door looking outside. and the others were taken while on the walk. the last photograph shows the library where i took the first photograph from. |
